Rare earths, 130 armed groups, 5.6 million internal refugees.
According to the U.N.H.C.R., the Democratic Republic of Congo counts 5.6 million internal refugees. Around 130 armed groups and militias currently plague the eastern regions, which are very rich in minerals, perpetuating a constant state of insecurity. Among them stands the A.D.F., a jihadist group whose stated aim is to establish a Caliphate, but analysts widely agree that the true goal of the Salafists is to exploit Congo's resources. President Tshisekedi declared an "état de siège" — temporarily suspending constitutional laws and transferring civil powers to military authority in Kivu and Ituri. Yet violence persists. The 'rare earths' of which Congo is one of the richest sources are essential for technologies tied to the energy transition: electric vehicle batteries, smartphones and semiconductors, whose demand grows exponentially with the advancement of artificial intelligence.
