Afghanistan: one year later

After the attack on the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001, the United States and NATO forces invaded Afghanistan with the aim of defeating Al-Qaeda and ending Taliban rule. On August 15, 2021, after twenty years of conflict, the United States withdrew from the country, allowing the Taliban to regain power.It is estimated that the war caused 240,000 casualties and cost the United States $2.3 trillion.Today, Afghanistan faces an unprecedented economic and social crisis. According to the World Food Program, out of a population of 40 million, 22 million people are experiencing food insecurity, and over 8 million are in a state of nutritional emergency. Additionally, over 3 million Afghans suffer from drug addiction.The U.S. government has also frozen $9 billion belonging to Da Afghanistan Bank, Afghanistan’s central bank.
