It is infamous for the events of October 1993, when the market was the site of the Battle of Mogadishu, or the Battle of the Black Hawk: helicopters were brought down in the area, which led to a fierce firefight that lasted all night. It used to be the stronghold of Al-Shabaab. After this episode, the Americans withdrew their troops from the country and Somalia descended into chaos.
